How To Find Your Vehicle VIN

Documents That List the VIN

  • Vehicle Title
  • Registration Card
  • Insurance Documents
  • Owner’s Manual (sometimes)
  • Vehicle Purchase Agreement

Where to Look on the Vehicle

Exterior Locations:

  • Dashboard (Driver’s Side):
Look through the windshield on the lower-left side. The VIN is typically on a metal plate at the base of the dashboard.
  • Driver’s Side Door Jamb:
Open the driver’s door and check the sticker or plate on the door frame (or the edge of the door). It often includes the VIN along with tire and manufacturing info.

Other Possible Locations:

  • Under the Hood: On the engine block or near the front of the engine bay
  • Spare Tire Compartment: Sometimes found in the trunk area under the spare tire
  • Vehicle Frame (for trucks/SUVs): On the frame near the front or rear wheel wells.

Pro Tips:

  • The VIN is always 17 characters for vehicles manufactured after 1981.
  • Avoid confusing numbers and letters like “O” and “0” or “I” and “1”.
  • If your VIN is shorter, the vehicle may be a classic or made before 1981.
